Bluffer’s Park Beach is part of Scarborough Bluffs; those cliffs that rise out of the water along the edge of Lake Ontario to the east of the city. Bluffer’s Park Beach came about during my parent’s day when the waterfront at the end of what’s now Brimley Road was fixed up and the small beach there was expanded a bit. I’m told the reason the city did this was to discourage people from climbing on the bluffs. You know, give them something else to do. Well, it worked because the beach is now one of my favourite places to bring the family on a hot summer afternoon.
The southern end of the beach near the parking area is really wide with plenty of space for the boatloads of families that go there on Sunday afternoons in July and August. If you want some privacy just walk a couple of hundred metres to the northern end of the beach, where it narrows. Always lots of empty spaces there to lay out your blanket and soak up the rays. There’s a marina nearby too so lots of nice sailboats coming and going. I took the family there last Sunday and because it was a little late in the season the beach was half empty. It was great! The kids splashed around in the calm, shallow water while Abby and me stayed under the umbrella and enjoyed the cool breezes off the lake. Later, I took the kids for a hike along the bluffs and I have to say the views from a couple of locations were spectacular. We then returned to the beach where Abby had a picnic lunch waiting for us. All in all it was just a great family fun day and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different to do in the GTA.
